beagle puppy?
My sister has a beagle pup that is about 3 mounths old. The poor puppy iches all the time. They give her baths and she still iches. (and no it is not fleas they have checked) But she is loseing hair where she is iching so much. I've heard you can give dogs childrens benadyl. Does anyone know how much to give her? If anyone knows please let me know.
i would go to the vet and have them check it out

The make a dog shampoo made with oatmeal, it really helps. Or talk to the vet and tell them about the sensitive skin, they can give you presription shampoo, it really does help

Some vets specialize in animal allergies. Have your sister look for one of them. I have a beagle and he has never had this problem. Maybe an oatmeal bath for temporary reflief?

My daughters vet told her just yesterday she could give her beagle two benadryl capsules but he is a full grown dog. I would try the least amount listed on the bottle and see how that goes. I don't think it will hurt him unless you give him a ton of it.

Sounds to me like the poor dog has allergies. If they would take her to the vet they could test her for allergies and then treat her accordingly if you only give her benadryl you'll be giving it to her all the time which isn't going to help solve the problem nor is it healthy.

It really depends on the size of the dog. My lhaso apsos weigh about 15 pounds, and get 1 fastmelt strip or tablet. A smaller dog would need even less. I'd recommend calling the vet and asking for the proper dose.

You can give a dog benadryl, but it doesn't work on them as often as it works on people. You'll have to ask your vet how much you can give. You should take the puppy to the vet. He shouldn't be itching so much. He may be itching because he has dry skin from the bath- try the waterless shampoo you can get at petsmart. It could be allergies, but these usually show up a little later.

do not give your dog any over the counter medicine without consulting a vet. it can damage their orgaans, especially a baby dog or even worse, kill them.she may be bathing him too much and his skin is dry in which you can take a teaspoon of safflower oil and mix it in with his food. if the hair loss is large it may be a condition called mange which need medication forom a vet. it may also be a food allergy. the time and love that goes into a pet is just like a child.take him to the doctor.good luck

don't give her benadryl, go to a vet.
my dog had that problem (and still has it) we got her at 3mo and she had little red bumps where she bites and itches which causes her to lose hair. have the vet check for mites and stuff-my dog didn't have it but yours might.
if you find the cause let me know-becuz we still don't know my dog's condition

You need to change the poor dears diet. She more than likely has a food allergy. Most common allergies are wheat, soy and corn. Other grains can also be allergens for dogs. Canidae and Nature's Variety are very good foods without these ingredients.
Bathing her too much, and bathing down to the skin and not just the fir can cause itching as well.
If her skin is flakey, i would put a little peanut oil or flax seed oil in her food everyother day … like a half a teespoon.
I would change her food to Canidae and I would not bathe her for two weeks. Her skin needs a break.
Also, don't bother doing those topical flea treatments like advantage or frontline… they will make her skin worse.
Best of luck.

Beagles are really prone to allergies. Also, if your puppy has a flea allergy it only takes one flea to cause that much itching. With the severity of symptoms at such a young age, allergy testing is definitely called for. If you guys don't want to do this much work then you should call beagle rescue and get another dog.

Please do not try to medicate the dog yourself. Call a vet. Could be a food allergy. My dog is allergic to beef so i have to feed him a lamb and rice dog food. I get it at petsmart. Could be mange too. Or ringworm. Both of which can be treated successfully by a vet. Frequent bathing can worsen the problem. Call a vet.

Please don't start medicating the dog without finding out the source of the problem. Benadryl makes dogs very sleepy. Why dope the puppy up for possibly no reason?
A better way to combat food allergies is to switch the food to a grain free formula like Wellness Simple Solutions, but dogs can be allergic to many other things besides food. I've known some beagles to be allergic to GRASS. The dog MUST be tested before being treated.

They need to get the puppy seen by a vet! He could be having an allergic reaction to the shampoo they used, it may need skin scrapings done to look for mites. The poor puppy sounds like it must be miserable if he's scratching so bad it's making bald spots! In all seriousness, if you had something that was itching you so bad and you were scratching the hair out of your head, wouldn't you go to the doctors? Get the puppy seen by a vet as soon as possible so he can stop suffering with the itch!! Good Luck!

ABSOLUTELY!!!
At least 9 out of 10 Beagles that do as you describe suffer from a food allergy. I would suggest switching to a different food formula. You will find that most of the time they will do better on rice than they do on other grains.
You will not cause a problem by trying small doses of benadyl, but don't be surprised if it doesn't do anything.
Cut back on the baths, they do more harm than good. If you do need to bathe the pup use WATER ONLY, soaps of any kind can also cause skin irritations.

Lets face it, beagles itch. Not only from allergies, but also dry skin. We have 2 beagle dogs and it is constant itching at our house! (definitely not fleas either) Before giving the dog medicine I would consult with the dog's vet for the correct dosage. My husband and I have talked to our vet as well as a local groomer for different shampoos, conditioners, vitamins etc to stop the itch. We currently use a special skin conditioning/skin relief shampoo for there baths. Unfortunetly, it doesn't fully stop the itch, it will just make the itch less constant.
