What dog is better- a beagle or a bichon frise?

My family is going to get a dog, so we are deciding between a bichon or a beagle. Which one is better for a family of four?

Here is some good research on both breeds. Read about them, write down all the pros and cons that you may have about each breed as you read about them, compare how many pros and cons that you've written about them, and pick the one that has more pros than cons. :0)

bichons are wonderful with people; especially children. they are used in some hospitals to cheer up patients with depression. i would go with a bichon frise, definately =]

I have a Bichon they are awesome loveable smart dogs, awesome with children and adults BUT grooming is a pain, they have to be brushed every day!! Beagles are smart and loveable also and do not need everyday grooming!! If you cannot commit to daily grooming a Bichon is not for you!!

Personally I would get a beagle. I have a family of four too. They are more tolerant of children. But be prepared that they howl ALL THE TIME. My family has a golden retreiver and she is the perfect addition to our family.

i think a bichon frise is better because they dont shed hair and stay pretty little even though they get that red stuff around there eyes

    well, it depends…
do you want a dog that will go exercising with you everyday? then you should get a beagle.
do you want a dog who will sleep with you on the couch after a long day at work?
then you should get a bischon.

    :)

It's you and your family's choice, if it were me I'd get the beagle, but you take a look at the links below to help with the decision, they are both great breeds of dogs. Of course the Bichon Frise need grooming every day (but they don't shed) which can be a pain.

Both have annoying barks. Beagles are more of a down-to-earth breed of dog, though. Bichons are kind of prissy. I think they're more of a status symbol dog.

There is no "better". In a family situation…I'd go for TWO beagles…..not one. They are low maintenance as to health…and HUGE maintenance as to love and exercise! You need to commit to FUN!

a bichon would be a much better choice. they are big enough to be able to be rough housed with, and small enough to be lap dogs. they have a soft coat, but it does not shed, and is ok for people with allergies. compared to a beagles howl, they dont have a loud bark. they are great with children, and love to be with people. if you want a great family dog, get a bichon. =]

Bichon Frise's are easily trainable, but they are very smart and they plan ways to get back at you if you upset them. (Mine pretended to have a limp when we were dog sitting a few dogs for a week so we would pay more attention to her.) The fur isn't that difficult to maintain and they don't shed. They are very energetic whenever you want to play and calm down fairly easily. We got our bichon when I was 4, my sister 2, and my brother was still in the oven. Bichon's are sturdy enough to take the abuse from children and are loving enough not to react. (At least mine was)

Can't imagine a bichon attacking anyone. Beagles are great if you don't mind the constant howling and barking. You do know they are hunters and have a natural instinct to howl and bark at EVERYTHING, lol. You will have to have a good temperment yourself to handle the noise.
You will have to decide whether or not if the dog will be strictly an inside or outside dog. Bichon's are great for the inside but with white hair not so good on the outside.
I would suggest you go to your local Humane society or animal shelter and check out a dog there. They are usually checked out for temperment before adoption and they try to match the dog with the family, not only will you get the family dog you are looking for you will be saving a life as well.
Good luck on your choice either way.

Beagle. They are gentle, sweet, lively, curious, and they just love everyone! They wag their tails a lot! Sociable, brave, and intillegent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and mostly good w/ other dogs, though dont trust them w/ other non canine pets. They have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. They don't like being left alone. Consider buying 2 if you will be gone a lot. They have a loud baying cry that can be disruptful. They may take off if off leash. They need a brisk walk every day. Otherwise, they are perfect!!

I can't be objective on this one! I've had my Beagle since she was 11 months old (shelter dog). She'll be 12 in June. She's gentle, intelligent, adorable…a great companion and she loves children. She requires minimal grooming and she's quite entertaining, too! BEAGLE!
