I had a beagle. He was SOOOOO HYPER!!!!!!!!! Insanely hyper. He was very difficult to house train also. He was absolutely adorable, but he tore up my house on a daily basis. It didn't matter how much I walked him (2-3 hours daily) plus a fenced in back yard to play fetch in, he always tore up my house.

First there are no such things as Pocket Beagles!
There just Beagles. Beagles are not the dog for everyone. They have keen hunting skills and they like to use them.
Also the dogs in movies are highly trained already so if you think these dogs come this way your very badly mistaken.
It takes training and discipline on your part to get a dog to do anything you wish it to do.
Do some research first before you decided on any one dog breed you think you'll want and do not go by what you see in a movie.

There is no such thing as a "Pocket" Beagle. They come in 2 sizes – 13" and 15".

Edit – Yes, you will see ads for "Pocket" Beagles, but they're poorly bred by Backyard Greeders and Puppy Mills that are only out to make a buck on their "Special Extra Small" dogs. Reputable breeders do not breed anything Pocket, Teacup or Micro sized!

There are 2 sizes of beagles I don't know what a pocket beagle is, and you don't get a dog because you saw it in a movie, beagles are great but not for everyone, after 101 dalmations everyone went and got a dalmation puppy a dalmation is not always a cute little puppy they grow to be very active dogs and the rescues were full of dalmations and many had to be put down.

there are different sizes of beagles from small to med, it depends on the background. they make a nice family pet but can be pretty stuborn and head strong at times especilly if they get a secent of something they want to hunt and chase.they are loyal to their owners and can be pretty protective but again they need training just like other dogs. they like swimming.walking and going for a run as long as there is no squirels or rodents that they can get a whif of or they will be off until u find them. it is a natural instinct to hunt.get a pup so u can work with him and u will have a nice little pet.

you can get a bigger beagle or a smaller one. They come in different sizes of medium, but you can't get a pocket one. They are all medium sized. Look at the parents and you will know what size.

I highly recommend looking at your lifestyle before getting a beagle. They are cute, but they are hunting dogs and go by scent. The need LOTS of excersie. More than alot of bigger dogs. They need to run for hours everyday. These dogs are very energetic. They are also strong willed and hard to train. They will defy you and try to be the boss of you. They are cute. They are loyal and very good friends. And they are amazing pets if you have time and energy and a good off leash dog park that is fenced.

"The first reference about "Pocket Beagles" can be found in the Elizabethan period. Queen Elizabeth I- was known to have these type beagles. It is said that they were small enough to be carried in a glove or gauntlet. The standard of the British Beagle Club in 1890 stated "that they should be no more than 10 inches in height……should be compact and symmetrical throughout, of true Beagle type and show great quality and breeding."

The current British Beagle Standard and the current American Kennel Club Standard DOES NOT make mention of the "Pocket Beagle", at all. In England the standard reads that "the desirable height should not exceed sixteen inches or fall below thirteen inches. The American Standard has two size "varieties" 13 inches and under, or over 13" to 15 inches. Any dog over 15 inches in America can be disqualified from the showring.

The last reference to the "Pocket Beagle" I can located in a reliable reference is in the 1960"s.

While there may be a few beagles that have the genetic tendency to be very small, you must also consider whether the dog looks like a beagle or just a small dog with beagle coloring. Many structural problems, whelping problems and other genetic concerns must be considered when breeding beagles. Breeding for size only could be a disaster waiting to happen.

I would hesistate to purchase a beagle for its unusual size, especially if the breeder was wanting a higher price for this "rare" pocket beagle. One source states that a "reputable breeder" does not breed for pocket beagles. Pocket Beagles are DEFINITELY NOT a special size recognized by AKC.

FYI–you can breed two 13 inch beagles and get an entire litter of 15 inch beagles and vice versa. Or you can get a litter with some of both sizes AT MATURITY. Reputable breeders make educated guesses at 8-12 weeks of age; but no one can guarantee that a puppy will stay a 13 or 15. That would be like looking at a 6 year old and guessing if he will be tall enough to play basketball or be stocky like a linebacker.!!"
